Known as a Boston dog lover’s favorite, the Canine Promenade is a 1/2‐mile Halloween costume parade around the Esplanade to benefit the Park, highlight the Park as a resource for dog owners, and celebrate the fall season.
In 2017, the parade was led by radio personality Kennedy Elsey of Karson & Kennedy on Mix 104. 85 dogs participated, while over 300 spectators watched. A panel of judges awarded prizes for best costume (dog) and best duet (human and duet). Winners included a Starbucks “Puppucino”, Amelia Earhart, lo mein and sashimi, the cast of Clue, the Mayflower, and a LEGO.
In addition to the costume parade, there was a variety of games, demos, and giveaways for attendees to enjoy, as well as goodie bags for all attendees.
The purpose of the Canine Promenade is to promote the Esplanade as a resource for dog owners. The newly restored Lotta Fountain, just west of the Esplanade Playspace, is one example of a dog-friendly amenity in the Park. Throughout the year, the Lotta Fountain offers a fillable water bowl for dogs.
